Recently bought a '56 WD45 and it's been running awfully rich, loading up, sputtering and backfiring. It has a Zenith carb. How do I identify which model carb this is? It looks similar to the Zenith that is on my '50 WD (which is identical to the ones pictured in each of the three manuals I have) except the Main Jet Needle adjustment on the 45 is pointed down at an angle (about 60 degrees) rather than being horizontal, like in the pictures and on the '50 model tractor. One of the problems I've found is that the brass fitting that houses the Main Jet Needle and threads into the aluminum casting body of carb is stripped out. (I think this is the cause of the rich condition, along with the lack of a choke return spring) It's bad, too - we're talking smoothbore here. I'm currently trying an epoxy thread repair, if it doesn't work I may be looking for a new carburator. Which is better, the Zenith or the Marvel-Schebler's? There were two different M/S's used on 45's, is one better than the other? There is a guy near me that has a used Marvel-Shebler off a D17 that he'd part with, will this work and is it a good idea? How big a difference between M/S used on WD45's and D17's? Any info, advice, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good Day!
