WD45 Ignition

Trying to help a friend diagnose his WD45. It was running OK but he wanted to tune it up. He replaced points, condensor, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, & the wire from the distributor to the coil. Says ever since it doesn't run well (no power). I don't believe it is a plug wire crossed - runs somewhat smooth but no power. Looked it over closely last night & didn't see any obvious problems with points shorting out to ground, etc. Plugs are wet with gas & seem to be already bad (Champion resistor). The tractor does spark, but the plugs are obviously not sparking correctly. Tried another old plug & it looked better. I recommended another brand of plug (non-resistor).

My question: Should there be a resistor in the ignition circuit with a bypass for starting? The coil is getting a full 12v. Is it possible that the wire he replaced from the dist. to the coil was a resistor wire? I think this might be part of the problem.

Thanks guys for any input.

Mark

Mark, Have your buddy ditch the Champion's, especially if they're resistor. You'll find the engine will run much better just getting rid of the resistor plugs. If he also has resistor wires, that's a no-no too. If you or your buddy have troubles finding Autolite 303's and a good set of wires, drop us a line. Be glad to help ya out. We have both 295's & 303's in stock, and build a nice set of solid core wires for the WD series machines....

Use Autolite 295 or 303 Sparkplugs

I think my vote would be to check the timing after replacing the points. Even 0.001" difference in point gap will change ignition timing dramatically. All the good plugs and wires in the world won't fix incorrect timing - and vice-versa. Good luck.

Thanks for the response guys. I know there is no inline resistor, & the coil must not have an internal one either because I was getting 12v in & out of the coil primary wiring. I already told him to chuck the resistor plugs. We'll see what kind of difference that makes.

If you want to know for sure that you don't need a resistor, disconnect the two wires in/out from the coil. Put a GOOD ohm meter across the two terminals on the coil. If it reads about 3 ohms or slightly higher, you don't need a resistor. If it reads around 1.5 ohms, you either need a resistor, or to change to a 12 volt coil.

You can easily get a resistor for NAPA or other parts place. The resistor used by MOPAR in the 70's works nicely.

Pull the wire from the coil, at the distributor end. Have someone crank the tractor while you try to note the spark here. Is it a nice deep blue spark? Or is it some lame yellow spark? If you have a nice blue spark, check your timing. By the way, get rid of those resistor plugs - and resistor wires too, if you are using them.

If you have a yellow spark, it could be from several things. A poor ground (dirty/rusty inside distributor) could do it. A bad capacitor (new ones can be bad) can cause it too. Make sure your distributor cap is clean and dry. If the tractor ran fine before you tuned it up, the odds are that your coil was wired correctly. This means I wouldn't use a resistor - or leave one in if it had one.

Maybe or it may have had a resistor block inline with the wire. I use a NAPA # IC64SB coil. It is 12 volt and has an internal resistor(makes a simpler installation). The negative post of the coil should have the wire on it that is going to the distributor if the tractor is 12 volt negative ground. A lot of guys are using Autolite 295 or 303 plugs in their ACs now.
