Throttle spring on C

My C surges when put under a load. In an earler post someone said to see if there was a small spring on the throttle shaft, there is not. I see the hole in the shaft where it goes but no spring. What I need to know is does the spring pull to open the engine or to idle it down. Thanks, Butch

Hi Butch,

Here's the spring they were talking about. It is called a link spring and is actually an anti-surge spring.

Here's a picture of the installation. The long loop end (not seen below) is hooked over the upper manifold stud shown, forward of the carburetor. The round loop end is attached through the hole in the carburetor linkage that you saw. The picture is of my '42B but your C should be the same.

The spring on the WD45 hangs vertically between the throttle rod and the engine block drain cock. Not very expensive either, also anything similar in size and strength should work to settle it down. Small hook on one end, large hook on the other.

Neither realy, it pulls more or less straight up. Hooks from the hole you found up to a manifold bolt. That spring is availible from AGCO but is purdy high priced aat around $25 depending on dealer mark up.

I put a $.79 Briggs-Stration govenor spring on my B. It worked fine.
