Hello, I was wondering if there was a place or someone that gives a wiring diagram and specs for a 12V Alternator conversion for the WD45 with a voltmeter? I have a tractor with practically no wiring on it and am converting to 12V. So far, I have an alternator (mounted) 2 headlights and 1 taillight to put on and a Voltmeter. That's it for the parts i have so far. Is there anyone who has a wiring diagram of something like this of a reference to one and specs (wire guages, resistors, switches etc.?

Thank you;

Sawyer

Those are good diagrams Arden, thank you. The only problem is I am putting in a voltmeter and i understand you have to wire it different than the ammeter. Also, I am not sure what Guage wires to use where. I have Grote lamps (#64931) (2.93Amp, 12V). Do i need to put resistor into the line before the lamps? I have the old coil and distributor, The coil is a 1.5 Ohm. Up here in canada when i ask for a ballast resistor, everyone thinks it's something for a house light.

Any help or references would be appreciated.

Thanks;

Sawyer

Genessee Products has a wiring kit for you with diagrams if you'd like to buy one (link below). Good folks - I've bought a couple of them. Takes a little to figure out, but works nicely. Duey's pages are also excellent.

You can use a 1156 bulb in the headlights - it's 12 volt, so no resistor necessary for the lights. Aaaannd it's 50 candlepower instead of the stock 32 candlepower bulb - a little brighter.

The ignition ballast resistor was used in I believe 1970's era Chrysler products. NAPA carries them (I *think* a part number for one of the resistors is IC132, but that's from my faulty memory - and it may not be the one you need), as does Car Quest. I'd suggest a 6/12 volt coil instead, though - no chance of getting the wrong resistor and burning points regularly (the capacitor and ballast resistor have to be sized right). Sandy Lake may be able to help, as may several tractor supply places.

Read what they have to say here about 12 volt conversions in the "Articles" section at the left of this page. They will point you in the right direction. As for ballast resistors, use ohms law and see what the lamp resistance is at 6 volts. Measure the current and divide that reading by 6. Insert a like-value resistor in front of each lamp. Do not try using one resistor for two lamps. As for a ballast resistor for your coil, use the same one they used for the later 60's and early 70's MOPAR cars.
