I just bought a C Allis with a belly mower,it has a hydrolic lift. When you raise the mower I can tell it is low on oil, but I can not find any place to add oil. Does it use rear end oil, if so what weight? Also when a load hits the engine the governer makes the engine surge. Is this because the governer spring is not stiff enough, or too stiff, or some other problem ? Thanks a lot, Butch

If you're using the PTO pump, it uses the transmission/final drive oil. The original book calls for 20W non detergent but later AC editions changed to tractor hydraulic fluid. THF is about 20W and has superior corrosion inhibitors and anti foam qualities. I get THF at Sam's Club for about $13/5 gal. It's also available at Wall Mart for a bit more.

My 1938 B model was surging like that until I remember that "springy thingy." It's an anti surge spring that's about the size and shape of a carberator throtle spring and connects to a stud on the manifold and then to a small hole in the throtle shaft going to the carb from the governor.

If that spring isn't there, the governor response is too agressive and the engine surges.

The Hydrolic is the same as the rear end and trans. Sounds like you are low in all. Looking from the rear the fill in on the left.
