Does anybody have a wiring schematic for 5040/5045/5050? I just bought a 5040 and it doesn't start without shorting starter leads. Has anyone else ran into this or have schematics so that I can troubleshoot it?

Thanks!!

Bill

Bill, I hope your 5040 starting problem is long since fixed. Just came across your post today and
thought I'd respond anyway. I have had the same problem and, after much grief, was informed that it had to caused by excessive resistance somewhere
between the key switch and the starter. The culprit turned out to be the safety switch on top of the trans. housing. One of the little terminals on top was just loose enough on its rivet that it sometimes didn't make a good enough connection to be able to trigger the solenoid. If you run into any other problems with this tractor that I've been through before, I'd be glad to try to help. The best to you and yours.

5040 won't start. Was running ok and then quit. Starter tries and engine turns over, but won't fire. Won't start with starter fuel either. Changed filters and re-bled engine. Has fuel at injectors and injectors check ok. Any other possibilities that should be looked at quickly????
Thanks for your help.

Bill/ I would check the neutral saftey switch. The switch is located on top of transmission cover in front of main shifting lever. This switch will only allow the tractor to start when the High and Low shifting lever is in the neutral postion, Hope this helps/ Jim

Bill, i dont have a 5040, or a book. Looked in the 6060 book and it is of no help. I have a couple suggestions, take it for what its worth--- Most motors have a key or button start. When you turn to "on" you put 12 volts to a starter solenoid that pulls in a big coil contact. The big contact connects the battery cable to the starter cable. Since you are "jumping" at the starter i assume it has a bendix like a CHEVY starter and not a remote solenoid like an old FORD. If that is the case, i think there is a smaller terminal on the starter (small wire) that connects to the key switch. Turning the key to "ON" puts 12 volts to the bendix and pulls in the coil. THis connects the battery calbe to the starter terminal, just as you did with your "jumping". I would check the wire from key to starter and the key switch itself. Hope this is not to generic. Maybe someone else can do better.
