Hey guys,

I hope this is not a stupid question, but I was just wondering what the differences were between a D-21 and a 220? I'm pretty sure they were made around the same time frame (late 60's, early 70's), and I thought the power was very similar too. Just wondering what advantages there are to one tractor over another (or disadvantages)?

Thanks in advance for any help.....

Shane

The 220 weighs 1500 pounds more than the D-21,and most of that is in a bigger and better rear end. The wheel base is 3 inches longer in the 220.they stoped making the 21 in 1969, and started the 220 in march of 69.The 220 has a shift leaver to shift the 2 speed , and the 21 has a nob to pull.The 220 has cast around the radiator, and the 21 had a crome grill. The 220 and 210 are just about the same ,except the hood and grill, and and more weight in the front end of the 220.

The major differences in the two tractors is in the tranny and rear end. The rear end of the 220 is much heavier than that of the 21. The axles are 3 and five eights inches in diameter vs. three and a quarter inches in the 21. The 220 weighs I believe a good 1500 lbs more than the 21.

I just know a couple of superficial things. One, the 220 is rated approximately 10 PTO HP more than the Series II D-21. I'm not sure what changes they made to the engine to achieve the extra horsepower. Another thing is that there were apparently some changes made in the gear ratios in the transmission. I know a guy who owned both of these models and he used the same gear in both of them to plow with. He said there was a small difference in the speeds in that gear and some of the others.

The way that I understand it is age. The D-21 was made at approx the same time period as the later D-17, and D-19s'. The 220 was made about the same time as the 180's, 190's, 200's, and 210's.

D21 = 1963-1969
220 = 1970-1974

i havent been around a 21--the 220 doesnt have a pwr director that works like the one on the D17 and 19. but it hasnt been problem for me--i dont thing there is anything a 220 wont move if u can hook it up. LOL it is a real power house. i have a fair amount of trouble burning up alternators--and have completly rewired it twice. its a lumbering machine--not too go at making short turns. but for heavy tilliage i think its great.
