WD Tranny Rebuild

Guys, You have all helped me before. I blew the gears in my tranny in the WD this weekend plowing - it needs oil? you don't say! Yeah, I know - duh! But anyways - I am considering rebuilding the transmission, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, and if I will need anything extra - like a hoist or something to do it, or if it can all be done without pulling the rear end or something.

I do have mechanical skills, just not the oil fill one's!

The first thing you need is a reprint of an AC "Service Manual For The Allis-Chalmers Models "WD and WD-45" Tractors". There are things you well need to know that this manual will help you with. I think you need to split the tractor to get the shafts out to get the gears and bearings out. and you will need access through the cover on the rear end. And if there is any damage to the rear end, (differential), you will need to pull the axle housings from each side too. You are talking major surgery here before you are done I think. Get the manual. Have you considered a used transmission? Many times it is cheaper to buy a whole parts tractor than new gears.

I talked to the guy at our Local Allis place, and he told me not to get into it. I was wrong, it wasn't my fault, the gear oil was topped off. But he thinks it may be the bearings, maybe pinion bearings. He said still, it's more than I want to deal with.


Anyways, I am thinking about parking it, getting a D-17 or at least a 45 and maybe working on the WD down the road, when I have the time - which means probably never! Oh well -

What went out? Did you strip the gears themselves or did the bearings just go? Should be able to do most of the work without pulling the engine. You will find more experiance on the AC web site board
