Checked wheel bearings but seem to have play in steering. How do I check out this problem? The old tractor has a narrow front end. The gear at the top connecting to the steering wheel shaft seems alright.

Old tractor been in the family for over 55 years but ignored for last 10 years just got the engine freed up and could'nt believe it started and ran.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks,
Ron

Also the pins that hold the u-joint on the shaft will wear as will the holes in the shaft. Roll pins will usually take up the slop in the shaft holes.

If it is a 1948, it is a WD, and after all these years, the bearing at the bottom of the pedestal is likely to be worn. It does not turn much in it's lifetime, so it becomes 'scalloped'- and if you notice more of a problem on hard-surfaced roads than on gravel or in the field, that is likely the problem. You need to raise the front of the tractor enough to remove the front wheels. There is a setscrew with locking nut on the lower end of the pedestal. Remove that and the front wheels. Might have to take the top cover off the front casting and raise the steering shaft, drop the bearing, and replace it.,

Ron if you go to page two here you will find a post titled WD nf play in steering and front pedestal. I think this will help take care of your problem.
