This has been a real thorn in my..... Anyway, my Dad has a 45 that we use to mow and when we go up hill or mow the tall stuff that takes the ponies, the motor will just slow down like you pushed the throttle lever up. It still runs fine, just slower. Sometimes, if you throw out the hand clutch, it will pick back up, but you usually have to push in the foot clutch and stop the PTO. I sure hope you guys can point me to something easy, I may build 600 hp race engines, but this little orange tractor has me baffled.

If you have not already figguered it out I would suggest checking for restricted fuel flow.

We have a WD that would slow down under a load until it just quit, like you turned off the switch. Finally found that the problem was a clogged air intake. Wasps had filled the narrow area between the tubes with mud and the old tractor was starving for air. Cleaned out the mud as all was great again.

Sounds like the governor is getting worn or the linkages from the hand control/governor/throttle are getting a lot of cumlative wear that the governor cannot correct for. You might try running a string from the throttle link back to the drivers seat and gently try to add throttle with the string when the engine slows down. If you can add throttle doing that you probably have worn governor pins/weights. They are available for replacement.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look at that governor thing. That's knid of where I was leaning as we have went over the fuel and air recently.

Thanks again,

Greg

I expect you have checked the timming, and tuneup etc. What the other guys said. A 45 doesn't slow down much. Mostly the governor opens them up and they speed up under load. After all it is an orange tractor.
