Paul, If the lights work and doesn't blow the fuse with the cover off, then when you put the cover on it is touching either a wire or terminal and shorting it to ground, thus blowing the fuse. These things can be very hard to see and locate, but it sounds like you almost have it whipped, at least narrowed down to the source of the problem. I wish you continued good luck. Bob D. (La)

Paul, Ammeter for 6V Positive ground should be hooked up (+) to starter motor, (-) to fuse tower of headlight switch. Also, it's important to make sure the headlight switch makes a good ground in the Ammeter box. Could pop the fuse if not. New paint or rusty boxes make poor grounds. When circuitry is correctly connected, switch also needs to be grounded properly. Fuse should be 15-20 amp. Make sure the Reverse Current Relay is properly grounded also.. HTH

Steve..... ..Got a question for you....
Need help on wireing of a 12 volt system that is on a G Allis..... I have coil, points, alt (12 volt) and a ignition switch and two resisters....do you have a diagram of such???? I,ve got to get this tractor ready for a show and afterwards I'm switching it back to 6 volt system (all my parts for 6 volt system won't be here till after the show) If you have a phone number i'll even call if you would help help me out..... ..

keith, i sent you a diagram of an alternator on a 12 volt system. there is a resistor in the charge circuit to make the alternator start charging. i assume the second resistor is the dropping resistor to get 6 volts to your old coil. might check to confirm this.

Steve in N.J.and Steve
Thanks for your quick response. My wiring is lights front and back to light switch, cutout bat to ampmeter-side with short wire from-to fuse, starter wire to ampmeter+side, arm wire to cutout, field from gen to light switch resistor.I had to take everything back off to make sure there was a good ground all bright and clean. With this hookup I get - charge,if I take the field wire off the switch an ground it to eng block I get full charge at ammeter.I know the front switch box cover has to be grounded but when I put a new fuse in and put the cover on the fuse will pop,if I leave the cover off lights will turn on.I MUST BE STUPID.
AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND SORRY FOR BEING SO WINDY. THINK ORANGE PAUL

the generator has two terminals "A" and "F". IF you take off the wires and ground the "F" terminal to the frame, start motor and chekc voltage across the two terminals. you should get about 12 volts on a non regulated 6 volt system. --Now, connect the the "A" terminal back up to the cutout. cutout to ampmeataer, ampmeter to battery and startup ( "F" is stil grounded). start tractor, you should now get full charge, about 8 amps. --Last step is the test the "F". the F terminal runs to ground thru the light switch. with lights on it is 100% ground. with lights off it is grounded thru a resistor on the switch and does not get "full ground" and therefore only charges 3 amps. Note the switch and resistor must have a good ground for the generator to work.
