WD no power

I have a WD that last fall started to run very rough. It was smoking and using a lot of oil. So I replaced the rings. While I had it apart I went ahead and had the head worked at a local machine shop. I have it back together but now it is only firing on 2 cylinders. I have replaced the points,plugs,condensor,wires everthing that I think could be causing this, However it continues to run on 2 cylinders. The number 1,2 pistons have compresson and have spark, but the tractor will run even without these 2 wires connected. I am truley baffled! I do not know what to do next. Is it possible for the cam to be worn and needs replaced? I believe I have it timed correct. If you are looking down on the distrubitor cap the number 1 wire is directly to the right of the snap to hold the cap on. Maybe this is wrong? Again I am baffled. I can not find a mark on the flywheel for timing. PLEASE help me I want to use this tractor. I have also rewired it for 12volts using a GM alternator. This seems to be working well. The part that baffles me the most is the tractor has spark and compression. WHY WONT IT RUN?

If it is not firing on #1 and #2 try switching these two spark plug wires. It might just run - then. Check the firing order carefully. Check the timing WITH A TIMING LIGHT WITH THE TRACTOR ENGINE AT CRANKING SPEED, RUNNING AT IDLE, AND AT FULL RPM IN ACCORDANCE WITH (IAW) THE MANUAL. Check to be sure that you have sufficient valve clearance on all valves IAW the manual. Then, be sure the govenor is correctly adjusted. It should have plenty of power.

You may want to check your firing order against the correct rotation of the distributor. Recently, I finished rebuilding an 8N, and when I rewired the distributor cap, I mistakenly wired it clockwise, when the distributor spins counterclockwise. Net effect, firing on two cylinders (though it was #1 and #4 if I remember correctly). Anyway, I spent about 15 minutes scratching my head before I decided to check the book. It had been so long since I had disassembled everything, I couldn't specifically remember the cap wiring order, and just assumed that it was clockwise.

I know it may be a long shot, but it may be worth your checking it out.

P.S. Do you have the points gapped correctly?

Have you ran it with the valve cover off and watched the valve train for correct action? Is the manifold and its gaskets in good shape? The firing order is 1,2,4,3 as I recall. I am not sure about the #1 terminal location on the distributor cap.
