Hi Randall. I just bought one today to, 2nd Allis I've got (D14 and now a D17). You'll find the serial number on the left side, stamped on the casting between the engine and the rest of the tractor...just got through looking mine up. Mine happens to be D17 28749...which, according to the list here makes in a 1960. Go to a Dealer and you'll be able to get whatever manuals you'll want or need, or buy them on here, I'll bet they are the same. As for the "series", I can't help you there, I really don't know much about how that worked. I believe the last series...series 4 had 3 point...I think... What I do know is that from all I've ever heard the D17 was a really good tractor--I guess we're gonna find out!! I bought this one at an estate sale---crazy deal, had no intention of buying it. Apparently its sat in the barn for the last eight years, they started it and drove it out for the sale and suddenly it was bogging down and then died, and then the discovered the oil had water in it...so they took out the battery and sold it..."as is". This tractor is "letter perfect" otherwise...all the shields and covers, etc. Wide front...fenders...ZERO dents...So...I'm gambling, but they also had a Gleaner E combine which they started and ran, which I bought...So I'm hedging my bets on the engine.. Oh...also this tractor has EXCELLENT rubber. Anyway, pulled it home and as soon as I get some time, I'm gonna pull the pan and see what the deal is. After getting it home, I can rock it in gear and see the fan move, so the engine isn't froze...Who knows...maybe it something simple like a head gasket??? Good Luck with yours.
