Hey all,
Got another question for you. I have a C (I think, neighbor came over today and swore it was a B) anyway, I haven't really looked that hard yet, but how hard is it to replace the brakes on these? I have adjusted them up and now I have some pedal at least, but I have to put all of my 230 lbs on them to come to a slow stop. I was told that you have to pull the axle housings off to do it, but I am not for sure. Any help is very much appreciated, thank you.

Take the covers off and see if the pins are rusted in....if they don't move sideways with a screwdriver you may have to drill a hole on the inside so that you can take a punch and drive the pins out. Then it is just a matter of pulling out the bands and putting new ones in or relining the old ones.

If the old ones are oily, you probably have leaking shaft seals in the transmission, and new linings will soon fail. You will have to pull off the finals to replace those.

I've brought life back to oil soaked linings by dribbling oil absorbant (floor dry) into the brakes.

The serial numbers start with either B or C, and are stamped at the base of the gearshift lever. Some parts may have been interchanged, tho.

Ok, I checked out the SN and it is a B--the owner had told me it was a C, oh well. Anyway, I went ahead and tore the brakes out of it, the left side is terribly oily and the lining was falling off. So, how much of a pain is it to pull of the final drives to replace the seals?? I guess I am willing to do it, just wanting to know what I am getting myself into. Thanks.

The axle housings are fairly easy to remove. pull the seat assemble the fender supports then jack and block th transmition remove the wheel and the four large nuts are the only thing holding it in. get help to slide it out its very heavy.

I WOULDN'T BE IN TOO BIG OF A HURRY TO PULL THE REAR HOUSINGS YET. PUT IN THE BRAKES AND USE IT FOR A WHILE. CHECK IF THE IS ALOT OF COTTON AND OTHER FOREIGN MATERIALS IN THE HOUSING, MICE CRAWL INTO THEM AND BUILD NESTS AND THIS CAUSES SMALL SEEPAGE OF OIL TO APPEAR ON THE LINING WHICH MAY OTHERWISE DRIP OUT.

YOU COULD ALSO HAVE LEAKY SEALS BECAUSE THE TRANY IS FULL OF WATER. THIS WOULD CAUSE IT TO LEAK WHEN IT WOULDN'T NORMALLY. PULL THE PLUG ON THE SIDE OF THE TRANY AND SEE IT OIL RUNS OUT. IF IT DOES THEN DRAIN AND REFILL

You must have seen my finals. I could hardly get the bands out for all the meece-urban-renewal-housing in there. There were even filbert nut shell halves laying in there.

They sure soaked up a thick wad of grease but nothing to worry about.

hey fellas, I know this was Travis' message, but I sure have pulled alot of info out about those brakes.

I have a C that has the same problem as Travis, and I've been wondering what to do. Can't wait to get back to Michigan and look into it! (I'm in Louisana on business this week and next)
