What is the bolt for that is sticking out in between the front tires? Does this tighten up the steering?
Also, I've seen postings refering to removing shims from the front end of a WD to fix the wobble. Where precisely are these shims located?

One of the main causes, not yet mentioned, is wear in the universal joint and the pins that lock it to the shaft. On my WD it was a series of things but the final fix that really tightened it up was adjusting those shims. The shims are located behind the plate where the worm shaft coming from the universal joint enters the steering box. There is a bearing here and on the other (front) end of this shaft. Shim adjustment takes the wobble out of this shaft and tightens the slop between the worm and sector gear. Worked great for me. Not a dificult job but a little time consuming. The correct parts are available from AGCO but the U joint can be gotten cheaper at other sources. The holes for the pins in my steering shaft were worn some so standard AGCO pins did not fit tight. I use a large roll pin with a second smaller roll pin inside of it to get a really tight fit. I have seen where the use of only one roll pin would twist off but two give you the strength.

The bolt you discribe locks the bolster shaft and the spindles together. Every WC and WD I have worked on that bolt is loose and at least half the problem with steering wobble or slop. Hold the bolt, loosen the lock nut a few turns and turn the bolt in tight. The shims you discribe adjust the bolster bearings. If the bolster bearings are bad enough to cause slop in the steering removing a few shims isnt going to cure it and as JMS suggested the cure is to replace them . You can check them for slop by jacking the frame up and watching for vertical movement in the bolster.

Butch, I think Dave was speaking of the shims on the input (worm gear) shaft. If this shaft has end play, it also contributes to wobble. I agree that you have to check all points; a little here and a little there can add up to some serious wobble. In addition to the one on the bottom of the pedestal, there is another one of those damnnable setscrew/locknut deals on the driven gear at the top of the pedestal, as well. I found a replacement for the U-joint "cross" at Napa; Precision #861. Here are some other replacements: Neapco #1-1475, TRW #20001 and the A-C original is #224890. I found the Napa cross to have slightly longer journals and caps which should wear better than the originals.

If the front end wobbles, especially on hard-surfaced roads- check the bearing at the bittom of the pedestal. It will look 'scalloped'- slight indentations, because it does turn very much, but always in the same place.
