Farmall M Belt Pulleys

I have seen steel and "paper" pulleys on M's and I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on which is correct by year. Were all steel pulleys used in certain years and paper in others like maybe the war years? Are there any particular watchouts when purchasing a used paper pulley?

i believe all pulleys were origianally canvas 'coated' to reduce the obvious drawbacks. if others disagree i'm more than willing to learn and confess my ignorance. we all learn something sometimes. we all fail to learn something usually!
