Stripped Gears on WD PTO drive

While bush hogging today, I ran over a roll of old fencewire and before I could get my foot on the clutch, the gears stripped out of my PTO drive. I have not taken it apart yet, but am wondering when this happens, what typically is broken and must be replaced? Also, since the transmission has helical gears will parts from another helical geared tranny be required for replacement? I know of a couple of old WD's sitting in the weeds, but they have straight cut gears.

BTDT Same thing happened to me. It turned out to be the housing cracked. I replaced the whole unit with one from a helical gear WD-45 (mine was a straight gear WD). I understand its fairly common for the shock of the blade stopping so fast to break the housing. Now I only bush hog with the D-17 and I score the shear bolts. You can also get replacement housings new.

You sure that it didn`t just shear the bolt off at the pto gearbox ? I have seen that happen a few times, with both ends of the bolt still stuck in the outer shaft.

You would be able to use the WD parts I think, the PTO stuff is all before the transmission, it is before the hand clutch in fact too. From my parts book it looks like most will fit. The only difference is the 25 tooth sliding gear in the bottom of the pto. Two numbers are listed. One for prior to S/N 20830 and one for effective S/N 20830 and up. And this one has a different no for the diesel too. If you have any other questions you can e mail me. But put WD PTO in the subject or I will likely delete your message thinking it is junk mail.

WD didn't come with a diesel engine.

No they didn't, but the 45 parts will bolt on with the exception of some diesel parts.
