I have a 39 B with no electical system...I would like to put headlights on it. The radiator that I bought has the provisions for the lights, but I was wondering how to wire them up..does anyone know if a G.M. alternator will work? I know those have a voltage regulator inside already. I would like to hear from someone who has done this before or would know the best way to go about it. My B also doesnt have a battery box, but I thought of maybe "hiding" a little 12 volt battery out of a trailer break-away setup in the toolbox... would that work????would the G>M> alternator be 2 much for that? I would also like to buy a set of lights (got any lying around?)
Thanks Terry

How does the price of two batteries compare? Keep one charged in the shop to exchange when the battery in the tractor runs down.

Terry, The GM 10SI alt that you refer to would work fine for a small battery like you mentioned. As Steve mentioned, it'll only put out what it's called for to replace. You mentioned using a breakaway battery. I install a solar powered breakaway system on trailers once in a while. The solar panel charges the battery when not in use. I don't know how much you would use your headlights, but if it isn't much, maybe a solar panel setup would be the way to go. They're not cheap, but the price for one of those vs an alternator, bracket setup, belt, & setup time might out weigh the price with the solar setup. Just a thought..... Drop us a line if interested...

If you don't use your PTO, you can mount an alternator back there to run off a PTO pulley. I saw a setup that had the generator bracket and battery tray as one unit sitting right under and behind the seat frame. They make V-belt pulleys to replace either PTO shaft.

the delco 10Si from Gm is the most common and cheapest way to go. you can get smaller units, but they cost more. the problem is in the mount for the alternator base. i have an old B thah had the motor block drilled and tapped with two 3/8 bolts to hold the base. about same as the later B. I have put several of the delco alternators on tractors. one small B i have a 12 volt generator, and used a 350 amp garden tractor battery to "hide" it as you say. it seems to work fine. just because a alternator puts out 60 amps does not mean it has to. it only puts out what you need. i will send you a drawing of the wiring needed. like i said, main thing is to make a solid base mount for the alternator. rather tan driling the block, you might look at cooming up several inches from the frount radiator/wheel mount vertical plate.
