Update in the saga of my rear tire on the D14

Despite good advice on getting the tire back on the bead after replacing the valve, my efforts failed. I didn't rent a "Chetah" because I decided that the rental fee would probably buy a tube, which I would need anyway if the "Cheetah" air blast didn't work.
Meanwhile overnight the bead had loosened lower down and all the water drained out except in the lower part of the tire. So my questions now are:

I will get the water that is left out, but do I need to completely dry the inside before I put in the tube?

I have the water adapter for replacing the water. There is a small valve which seems to be to let the air out. Can someone explain a little about what this process of adding the water involves? Where can I buy Calcium Chloride? I read this (http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint138.htm)article and I am wondering what the recirculation pump is like? Is this a job only for a tire store?

Hi Tom,

Was the "water" inside previously a calcium chloride solution? If so, the tire really should come off the rim altogether for additional rim investigation and possible repair. If not, I would see if I could get the interior as dry as possible. Is the bead completely broken down? It will need to be to install a tube.

If you are planning to install a calcium chloride solution, you should ONLY do so inside a tube, IMO.

You really don't need anything special for a "recirculation" pump. I have used a small general purpose pump that uses garden hoses on both suction and discharge for filling and draining. I have also done the job without a pump at all. To do it without a pump, you will need to mix up the solution in, say, a 50 gal drum (with a bottom drain fitting for a garden or other hose) and be able to place the drum bottom above the top of the tire so the solution can drain in by gravity. This is slower but works...you just need to get it up in the air. I have used a front loader bucket for this purpose in the past.

Does your water adapter look like this?. If so, you will want to start with the valve stem at top vertical center. As the liquid is pumped or drained into the tire, it displaces and compresses air that was in its' place. The pressure inside the tire will slowly build up and the flow of liquid into the tire will slowly decrease. Every once and a while, stop the pump or shut off the gravity flow (with a valve you should have installed if you go the gravity route) and depress the little button on the side of the adapter. Don't block the small hole with your finger. This will let the air out and you can go back to filling the tire. You will have to do this several times if you go the gravity route. Don't fill above 3/4 full. You can determine this by keeping tabs on the gallons used compared with those in the charts for your tire size as well as noting when liquid begins to be expelled out that little vent hole instead of air.

You should be able to get 77% calcium chloride flake at any farm store. Many will say you shouldn't use CACL because it eats you rims out. Indeed it can if you are not attentive to detail. I have used it successfully for over 30 years in two of my tractors (both front and rear) with no significant problems. You just need to always use tubes, even in tubeless tires, and repair any leaks rapidly, particularly in the valve stem area. Even leaks past the stem valve itself (normal after a few years) can cause problems if not corrected promptly.

Good luck. Careful you don't pinch the tube when reseating the tire :o).

Thanks Rod, great information. I had found all the calcium posts on this site and read them. My adaptor is like the one at gemplers. I have no electricity or water at the barn where the tractor is, so the gravity fill will work.

But the tire was tubeless and I think I will take the tire off and clean and seal the rim, then put in a tube and use wheel weights for ballast. I found too many posts about CaCl2 being a problem. I'm sure it I were really careful and fixed leaks quickly, a corrosive salt would be fine as antifreeze, but I think I'll stay away from it.

I doubt the tube will be cute enough to pinch. :-)
