WD45 hydraulic leaks

I have my Grandfathers 1956 WD45 (gas). He always kept it in TOP condition and stored it in a shed.

My Dad says that Gramps gave up on trying to solve the leaking hydraulics because someone (a dealer?) told him the wd45 will always leak because of a defect in design or the way it was built. The leak seem to come from the control and not the cylinders.

I've repainted it and have new decals to put on it - I just dont't want ANY leaks of any kind if I can avoid it.

Any suggestions?

David, start by pressure washing the control/pump area. Then start the tractor and cycle the hydraulics and locate the source of the leak. Depending what you find, you may have to change the gasket or seals on the control, or you may get lucky and just tightened a few mounting bolts and snug-up a few hydraulic lines. I have 3 45's and I believe it is the nature of the beast for these tractors to seep a little fluid here and there. When there is a leak that creates a puddle then I go after it. Do your best to stop them, but don't get discouraged. I would suspect the seals in the control are the source. You have to remove the control and pump to get to them. Not a difficult task, but time consuming. I usually loosen the side rail so you can swing it out some - makes it easier to get the pump out and back in. The last time I did one I was able to get the seals and gasket from Allis. Keep us posted. Tom
