I have just aquired a C (I think) AC with a belly mower, it's in pretty good shape, needs paint and a couple of other small things, but I have a problem. It's still 6-volt with a generator and I would like to keep it this way, but the starter cranks terribly slow, when it is off the tractor it spins just fine, but I have a feeling it needs adjusted somehow with the setscrew that holds it in. I have tried to adjust it some, and made some progress, but it still has it's times. Any ideas? Thanks

Travis, I agree with Butch. The 6V starters are not a ball of fire to start off with, (it's just the nature of the beast) but it shouldn't spin to slow. Grounds are super important as is cable size and cleanliness of the grounds. The proper size cables are 1 gauge. We have them in stock for the B/C machines if you need em'. I build them right in our shop for the different model AC machines. Drop us a line if interested..... .

The setscrew has nothing to do with how the starter works except maybe grounding it. Maybe by moving this setscrew youhave immproved the ground connection. The setscrew, which fits into a hole in the starter, just locates the starter in the proper position. Check brushes on starter too. Make sure they are in good contact with armature.

Before you into the modification mode, dissasemble and clean every connection including the terminals, switch post and ground attachment point with sandpaper unil bright and check the size of the cables. I cant remember the cable size number for sure but I think #1 is the size you need. A good automotive store like NAPA can help you with the cables. If you have a TSC nearby they will have heavy cables marked for 6V and the proper braided-type ground strap. Also remove the starter and sand the hole and nose clean (this is your ground connection) With proper cables and clean connections a B-C should spin over allmost like no plugs in the motor.

Thanks for the info, guys. Never messed with a 6v pos ground system much before, but will hopefully learn something valuable from this. I finally got to take the starter out and I see what you mean about the "setscrew" going into a hole--that helped out a bunch, now just gotta get better cables and should be ready to go--thanks again.
