My '47 B 6 volt with mag has begun to give me a problem. Over the last 11 years I have had several things happen which I was able to diagnose and correct but not this time. It seems after using it for 1-2 hours it begins to miss and sputter until I pull the choke in and out to clean it up. Once that starts, I am having to move the choke in and out to find a happy medium and then it starts all over. Every once in awhile it seems to "take off" and suddenly run great but that is usually short lived and I am back to messing with my choke again. At some of your suggestions I pulled the carb, cleaned it with spray cleaner, changed the screen, and put in new plugs which BTW were only carboned a little. All four looked the same so 1 cyl is not acting up. Same problem except I used to pull the choke all the way out to kill the tractor when I was done with it, (I know but that's a whole different post), and now when I pull the choke out there is little or no change in how the engine runs. Would a bad coil give me this problem but be corrected by fuel changes? Should I go further and rebuild the carb, replace the needle/seat, or what am I looking at here? Thanks for your suggestions.

I wouldn't point a finger at the mag just yet. Unfortunetely, mags take a bad rap for fuel problems. That sounds like a fuel delivery problem or a intermitant vacuum leak to me. I would service the whole fuel system tank to carb. Sounds like fuel is not heading downstream to the carb....

Check the gas cap for a plugged or partially plugged vent. my B had a replacement cap that was unvented and caused something like this.
If the fuel system checks out, try replacing the condenser in the mag. If you have a weak spark, richening the mixture with the choke provides a charge that is easier to ignite. Also could be the mag coil for the same reason.

pull the sediment bowl out and check for rust on top of it. That was my problem....lack of fuel because the rust was blocking the flow therefore I also had to cut the air down with the choke .

pulling the choke out shuts off air and sucks move fuel thru the carb. it sure appears to be fuel related. first make sure your intake manifold gasket is not leaking and bolts are tight. then disassemble the carb again and clean. rod thru all ports. put an inline filter on the gas line. dump the tank out and flush and clean the screen one more time.

Thanks for the tips. Will go after the fuel system on Tuesday and post my results. The vent on the cap is clear and the inside of the tank looks clean but I will dump and flush it anyway to clean out the sediment bowl fitting too.
