Wd allis pto clutch removal

hello, i need to rebuild the pto clutch on my wd allis,
can i remove the assembley by taking battery box off, take the pto clutch cover off,loosen bolts
then take lift arms off ,back cover off ,slide
pto shaft back ,then lift the assembley out,
instead of splitting the tractor? thanks fred

I assume that you are referring to the "tractor clutch" or the "hand clutch" and not the "engine clutch". If you are, the answer is: NO. You will have to "split" the tractor, but not at the engine to bell housing joint. The tractor must be split at the rear housing joint and the side rails must be detached from the rear housing. The rear clutch shaft must be withdrawn out the back of the multiple "wet" disk clutch assembly before the clutch assembly can be removed out through the top of its housing. When the tractor is "split" in this manner the two parts of the tractor are VERY UNSTABLE. I suggest that you get a service manual and become VERY familiar with what is required prior to attempting this repair. The two parts of the tractor should be accurately aligned and extremely well supported as well as allow for the sections to be "pulled apart". A fair amount of "other stuff" has to be removed or disconnected to allow the two sections to be "pulled apart". Alignment studs (or very long bolts)in the rear housing going through the flanges in the side rails are also an "aid" in keeping everything in alignment. Please be sure that you know what you are doing BEFORE starting this repair. The two parts of the sectioned tractor are heavy, fall fast, and hit hard! Also you may wish to actually get the repair parts, (including a gasket for the housing joint) that you will need prior to starting the repair as the parts are sometimes difficult to get. You should also fully understand the ADJUSTMENT of this clutch prior to replacing it. ADJUSTMENT is SO EASY. Usually the clutch can be adjusted a number of times before it has to be replaced. Again CHECK THE SERVICE MANUAL "FIRST" for adjustment procedures and specifications; it may save you a LOT of work. In my opinion, changing the engine clutch is simple, quick, and fun compared to replacing the hand clutch. The need to replace the hand clutch is what causes some people to sell their WD rather than repair it. Have fun, Good luck, be careful, and BE SAFE!

I may be wrong but I have a wd45 and i had to split it to get the assembly off the shaft.This was my first one,maybe others know better.Be sure to block it good if you split it.I hope this helps. good luck.
