Does the same oil work for both? And what type oil is recomended

Allis changed their specs in later years and called for their brand of Tractor Hydraulic Fluid (THF.)

I use the same stuff in all my tractors. It's about 20W, has superior lube and corrosion inhibitors and I can get 5 gal. at Sam's Club for under $15.

WallMart has it too.

Yes. SAE 20W is recommended.

Why is it that some manufacturers recommend thin (20W) oil and others require something alot thicker? I would think that most all transmissions would require very similar lubrication.

the original oil in the transmission of the B was like 90 wt gear lube, like many other tractors. when the installed the hydraulic pump, which uses the same oil sump, the had to change to 20 wt (now trans hydraulic fluid) to get it to pump. you are right, most transmission with gears would like a thicker oil. that plan changes when you start adding oil pumps.
