Hi I just picked up my new L59 belly mower for my B. Woods says that the belt pulley shaft has to be straight (39 and up) but mine is a '39 and it still has the tapered shaft. They say to weld or build up with shims. I dont have a welder, so where do you get these shims? Is there a more practical way to fix this without taking the tractor apart? I dont have the newer shaft either. Thanks in advance. Maybe someone has a clever way around this

Terry,

I'm no Woods mower expert either, but I do know I can go down to my local bearing wholesaler and buy just about any size pulley with a tapered bore in various sizes to fit just about any shaft and taper as well as many pulley diameters and belt sizes. Hope you get it worked out. One day I'll be doing the same thing--trying to get a mower installed and working on our '39 B.

Hi Terry,

I don't know anything about the Wood's mower but my '42 B has the tapered belt pulley shaft. The parts book lists a different part number for that shaft (and for the pulley) after 1939 but as far as I know all Bs have the tapered shaft. It would seem to me that having to build up with weld or use some kind of shims is an awfully half-baked way of going about it.

Perhaps someone with experience in installing that mower on a B will respond.

terry do not i repeat DO NOT WELD on your shaft.i have put many of these mowers on b,c,and ca tractors and have never seen a belt pulley shaft that was not tapered.i think your parts man is all wet.make sure he is not looking at a c international or some such thing as this.i just bought a pulley for a tapered shaft on the belt pulley about a year ago.about 50 bucks new.if your parts man cant figure it out find another dealer.i have also set them up using the pto and it works alright only thing is you will be running 1/2 speed of the belt pulley.if u cant get any satisfaction get back on the board and i will get u a part number for the pulley u need.good luck rudy

Thanks for helping guys. I made a mistake in my post though. What I meant to say is that mine has the SMALLER tapered shaft (sorry!). the pulley has a tapered hole for the 39 up bigger shaft. Mine IS a 39 but it must have been made before the went to the bigger. Rudy, Id would like the part #'s for your pulley, and you supplier. Thanks! welding is definitely out. Terry

well terry the part # for the one u dont need is 7451 and it looks like they dont make one for the smaller belt pulley shaft i would be seriously considering buying the woods pulley for the pto shaft 1/2 speed of the belt pulley but they still work alright
