Hi, I have almost strait Lucas oil treatment in the gearbox and the gear drive pans. I also have a litttle trouble getting it to go into gear sometimes after I first start it. I have to rev it up and bring the rpms down quick to get things to stop spinning and catch it. The clutch seems nice and grabby, definetly doesnt slip. it also was hard to catch in gear with original gearbox lube.It also whines somewhat in 3rd...dont know if thats normal or not.

Terry, sounds like the bevel pinion shaft bearings need adjusting. Break tractor between torque tube and transmission. There is a cap to remove to make this adjustment, also unstake the nut then tighten to adjust and restake. A manual would be a good idea. Dale

My 49 B does not like to shift on the fly, I can do it if I get it just right. But I don't try that. Start out from a stop in whatever gear you want to use.

Thanks for the input. I cant put the tractor in gear and hold in the clutch though because its a crank start tractor. Just dont know why it doesnt stop spinning when the clutch is pressed. I know they are not synchro'ed. It still should go into gear a little better than it does, Terry

A whine in third is normal.

Tractor transmissions are not syncronized like a car or truck. Was not designed to shift good. You could try putting tactor in gear and pushing in clutch to start. What you describe is normal for quite a few tractors. Some are better than others, all do this to some extent. Gear noise is also common.

Here is how you do it: Since you probably start the tractor from off of it, you have to have it in neutral. So when you get ready to put in gear, press in on clutch and count to ten, then put it in gear. As long as you don't put it in neutral and let out on clutch, you will be able to press in on clutch and shift gears without waiting. But when you first start you have to wait for things to stop.
