I recently bought a WD with a recent rebuild on the engine. It starts easy but sputters and dies under a load. I think the problem is carberation but am tring to rule out other problems. Can anyone tell me what normal cylinder compression should be for a WD. I checkd all four holes and got 75PSI. Seems a little low to me but since they are all the same and since it starts easily, I am thinking that it is not a problem. I should also mention that it has sat all winter so the rings could be a bit dry.

Compression might be a little low but as it's even may be your gage or some such. That would not cause it to sputter and die anyway. Could be ign or carb problems. Take fuel ine off carb. turn on gas should get a good steady flow for at least a minuite. If not, you probably have plugged, dirty etc opening from fuel tank to filter. Take off filter assembly clean holes in assembley and tank outlet. (This is a fairly common problem with WD's)If you are getting good fuel flow to the carb open drain in bottom of carb and check for a steady flow there for at least 30 seconds or so. Okay here the float valve is not sticking shut. May need a carb kit, may be leaky intake manifold gaskets but first I would chek ign. New plugs, good, solid wire core plug wires (if magneto) replace condenser, clean gap or replace points, clean connections and contacts. My WD had a miss when hot and under load, bad condenser so you never know.
