D-17 motor

The local ag center has a 170 AC sitting on the back lot that was used to auger corn until two years ago then parked when the compression got so bad it wouldnt start. The owner said I could have for free. The motor is shot and checking prices to overhaul run 2200 to 3200 bucks. Would a D-17 motor fit in this 170? This 170 has 3 point and decent tires. Is it worth fixing up?

I think they are good tractors at that price especially. Even if the overhaul cost two or three thousand dollars that is a lot of tractor for the money this day and age.

You can get a complete AGCO overhaul kit for that engine in the neighborhood of $500. Now assuming that you can reuse the crank and cam in it, you could overhaul that engine yourself for $750 (taking the head in to a machine shop to be redone) and basically have a brand new engine.

That sounds like a lot of money for a rebuild kit, unless you were going to pay someone else to do the work. I would say, if the rest of the tractor is OK as you say go for it.
