How do I know if I have a magneto in my WD?

I have a 1951 WD with a 1953 WD engine in it. I would like to know if I have a magneto or not. I have tried to understand what to look for and am still confused. The tractor has been converted to 12 volt, (if this makes a difference). The other day I started it and then pulled the battery cables off and it continued running. Is this any indication? Thanks for your help

Also with an alternator you can disconnect the battery and it will continue to run because the current is coming from the alt. When I was small my dad would take the battery from the truck and start the tractor, remove the battery from the tractor after he started it and put the battery back in the truck. We were poor and didn't have a battery for both.

Kevin,
A mag will be laying sideways with the wires going out to the spark plugs heading back at the driver. Also, most mag fired AC's used Fairbanks Morse mags, so you should be able to see a tag or stamping marks such as FMJ4B3, or a number that is close. In a distributor fired ignition, the distributor stands straight up with the wires facing the hood and running to the spark plugs. If there's a tag on the distributor, you should be able to read Delco Remy on it. There are a few other ways such as key switch etc. but that's the easiest that I can think of standing there looking at it. Hope this helps....

Steve,

Thanks for your response. It is definitely a Delco-Remy and stands up. So according to your description, this is a distributor.

Thanks again,
Kevin

Kevin, My pleasure! Sounds like a Distributor fired ignition to me! If ya ever need any electrical components, tune up parts, a wiring system, or just some electrical information for that WD, keep us in mind. Have fun!!

a distributor also has a center wire int he cap that is fed from an external coil. coil is a black round cylinder 2 inch diameter and 5 inches long. it iwll have two wires to it, one from the ignition switch for power. mag has nothing.
