Recently purchased D17 Series III (1963) gasoline tractor. Have had it about 4 months with no problems. Have been discing about 10 acres getting ready to put in some hay and pasture and lately it is starting to miss out after it has run for a bit and is under a load. Cleaned the air cleaner and still have the problem. Any suggestions? Rookie here and need to finish the pasture field. Don't want to take it to mechanic and spend big bucks if it is something simple.

Something to check. A couple of times in the last year mine has started running rough after it had warmed up. Pulling the choke out seemed to make it better. The problem traced back to the gaskets between the carburator and the intake manifold.

Thanks to all for your help. Cleaned out carb, and fuel lines and still had the problem. Suspect the coil, looks like "the original" or very old. Parts store didn't have that delco number in the book anymore so suspect it is old. Points, condenser, rotor and dist. cap look new, but picked up extra set as well as plugs and wires. Will start with the coil and work my way through the other. Again thanks to all!

Had the same thing happen once, ended up a piece of hay and dirt in the tank got stuck in the fuel valve. Would run good for a while then the junk got in the valve and cut off the fuel flow. Once the tank gets near empty take the fuel valve out and drain the tank..make sure you unhook the battery!

Time for a tune up. Points, plugs, condenser,
should do the trick. Might want to throw in a cap & rotor. And how do your plug wires look?
I wouldn't worry to much about a coil, Alot of guys are to quick to change them, But its pretty rare for a coil to go bad.

After is gets warm the coil will cause it like the other guys said. Clean your plugs, throw a set of points in, cap rotor wires if they are old and she'll be good to go. oh yeh the coil to.

My D-14 had/has this problem after about 4 acres of heavy pulling (disc and drag). At this point I can do 2 things. 1) I take it out of gear and pull it back to idle - get off and pick up rocks for awhile - or 2) Shift down to first gear for 1/2 a round. After this, it's good for a little while, then I have to do it again. It allows me to keep going. I suspect heat, although not much evidence to support my claim. I'm going to flush out the radiator after the planting season.

I replaced the coil and just got done discing for over two hours and not one miss or sputter. Sounds like this may be your problem too.

somtimes the coil will cause this, points gaped to close or condensor shorting out,not enough fuel flow, water in fuel or trash, this is just some things that could cause the problem let us know how you come out.
