Sparks at ground connection on AC B

I've been having probs today with my B. It started but ran rough. I couldn't figure out why. I was running it around the yard a bit to see if it would clear up, then I think I ran the fuel tank dry. So I filled it up but no luck restarting.

Now for the kicker... during my starting attempts I noticed that sparks started coming from the bolt that connects the ground to the steering post. The sparks don't happen at every crank but were fairly consistent. My system seems to be 12volt negative ground.

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

If it is 12 volt negative ground, it was modified somewhere along the line. This tractor originally was 6 volt, positive ground.

As for sparks - this is a sign of a poor ground connection. Completely remove the cable at this connection. Clean the paint and corrosion down to bare shiny metal. Now clean the terminal on your cable. Reconnect everything, using a good clean bolt. After all this, paint or otherwise weatherproof this connection.

Now when you crank the tractor, you might notice a day and night difference in how fast the motor spins. BTW, this is a very common electrical problem. Many overlook it when troubleshooting - they aren't given the tell-tale sparks to bring this to their attention.

Eric, Doug is right on the money there. After your connection at the ground is cleaned and re-attached, a little dab of Dielectric grease will keep moisture out, and keep the connection corrosion free. If you think you may need a new cable, we have them available...
