I HAVE A A/C C THAT I CAN'T GET RUNNING. IS THE TIMING MARK VIEWED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE FLYWHEEL AND IS IT THE FIRE OR CENTER MARK. ALSO IS THE NUMBER ONE PISTON TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE? I DID A COMPRESSION TEST AND IT HAS 125 IN 3 PISTONS AND 100 IN NUMBER 2. I THINK I HAVE IT TIMED RIGHT AND MAYBE IT'S THE CARBURATOR. DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CORRECT ZENITH CARB THAT SHOULD BE ON THERE.THANKS

Number one piston is the front one on the engine. Only one I've ever heard of numbering from the rear, towards the front, is Deutz.

Nathan,
The AC C used a number of Zenith carbs over the years. They include 9635,9636,9705,9706,9804,9805,10697, 10698,and 10699. And if someone put a B or CA carb on it, there are more numbers. And, some C's used Marvel Schebler carbs also.

the timeing mark is seen thru the 1 inch hole on the left side of the torque tube (clutch cover). you can set it to fire just about TDC. should fire at the fire mark when running and advance kicks in. pull a plug and make sure you have spark. crank the motor slowly untill the front piston is coming up on compression (put your finger over the plug hole) when it starts compression, turn till the TDC mark is seen in the hole (piston by the radiator). remove the mag cover and see that the rotor is pointing at the right wire. you can also hear the mag "snap" when you approch the TDC mark, or pass the FIRE mark. remember the mag dont rotate slowly like a distributor. the mag "snaps" and moves 90 degrees at a time when you approach the TDC mark.
