Magneto/coil problems

I have a 1937 Allis Chalmers. It had been converted from 6 volt to 12 volt before I bought it. The diods in the altenator went out two days ago so I took the opportunity to rewire the tractor acording to the magneto wiring diagram I found on the following site. http://dueyschutter.freeservers.com/photo3.html
I've run into a snag. This tractor has a coil connected to the magneto. I thought that if you have a magneto you don't need a coil. I'm not sure how the coil connects to the ignition switch. I connected it to the MAG post on the ignition switch but the tractor would not run. When I did a continuity test I found that the wire from the coil was grounded. My thought was to connect the coil to the unused Light post on the ingnition switch to give it power but I'm concerned that I might fry something. If anyone can help I would greatly appriciate it. Thank you.

Bart, If you need a coil for your mag, I have them in stock. You sorta' have peaches n' apples there. Either you'll have to change the switch, or install a new coil in the mag, and keep the switch you have to ground the mag and shut the motor.Drop us a line if interested...

Bart, Like Steve said, my quess is that the mag coil went bad and an external coil was installed so in effect you have a distributor type ignition. Keeping that in mind, the switch that has Mag listed on a post will be the WRONG switch. The mag post is grounded for stopping the mag system. You need a switch that provides voltage for the coil ignition. Duey

the B did not have a coil it had a magnito. as you said a mag does not need an external coil , it has an internal one. it was common practice yeawrs back that if the mag failed, it was normally the coil. instead of rebuilding the mag, you buy a cheap coil at auto parts and rig it to you magnito, power it from the battery and kink of make a distributor out of it. this is probably what you have. the coil should have the + terminal go to the on swithc or key and be powered from the battery. the negative wire goes into the mag inplace of its coil.
