seems to me like a manifold leak but i ain't finding it. i even filled the manifold with kerosene to check for cracks. i had the carb off and rebuilt that but no change. the tractor started acting up last summer when it was hot and i just blamed it on vapor lock. used it all winter on the feed wagon and once and a while it would cough and chuff out some smoke but now that it is warmer weather it don't hardly want to pull itself. it helps to open up the load jet a turn and also improves to pull off the air intake, (i cleaned the air cleaner) but the trouble never goes away. it will start right up and run fine cold, then when it warms up it will start to miss and if i open the throttle quickly it will falter or die. i still think i am right in my diagnosis of a vacume leak but why can't i find it?

The time that I had that problem it was to hot of spark plugs.

ok, so sunday afternoon i put new points and condenser in the mag and gapped the plugs. now today i am going to order a new manifold. also i found the specs and will check the float setting. Shoot i might even spring for new plugs and make a new set of wires.

sounds like a similar problem I had on my B with updraft carb. After trying a number of solutions already talked about, I found my fuel restriction at the sediment bowl screen. I cleaned it well and it ran much better. I replaced it and have not had the problem return. my 2c

One other thing since you mentioned it changes when you pulled the air cleaner. I have seen on earlier posts that the weight of the oil in your air cleaner will affect the running. If it is too heavy, air cannot move through it readily and might choke itself out. Last year I only had 10W30 around and cleaned my bowl out and refilled it with that to get some mowing done. Come to think of it, it is still in there. If it is happening often you would think your plugs were carboning dry chalk black. Check for carbon tracking on the porcelain. If it is there you may need new boots too. I would pull some plugs and get a look at those too. Between the fuel drier and a set of plugs, you'll spend $10 and I have been amazed as to how much just changing plugs will change the operation.

Once it dies, if it does not start right back up for awhile, then fires after a "cooling" period, I would be looking at the coil. I have had them get hot and mis fire only to run better when it cools down. The older metal cased ones even showed evidence of hot spots so you might check that out. Beyond that as already suggested, check the timing when cold and during warm up. If it does not advance right or too much that could be your source. Try some fuel system drier too. If there is a water bubble floating at the bottom of the tank, it might grab some of it as you move and of course not fire correctly. That is a longshot but I tend to run it through the system once or twice a year especially after it sat all winter. You also did not mention when your last cap and rotor was replaced. A crack in the cap would cause some of your symptoms but would tend to change with humidity, more than temp.A damp environment will cause the spark to jump to ground away from the plug post. Sometimes you can even see it when running the tractor in the dark. If your WD has the updraft carb, I find pulling the choke back about 1/4 inch when running cleans mine up even after it is warm. Good luck

We used to get a miss, if there was even ONE drop of water in the sediment bowl... Hope ya get it straightened out.!! Ron.

Could be insulation breakdown in either the condensor or coil. Another possibility, a crack in the spark plug porcelain. But since you mentioned the carb adjustments that helped--that might rule out ignition problems. Could it be something in the timing advance going haywire? If the timing advances too much, you could be getting some pre-ifnition. How's the engine temp when this happens?

Hope you get it straightened out. My neighbor farms with a WD and I've tuned it up a couple of times--but he's never had that problem.

Kevin, Make sure you have good fuel flow going to the carb. You might have some sediment in the tank plugging up the fuel sedient bulb and causing a fuel delivery problem. Might be worth while to clean the tank, blow out the fuel line, and service the bulb. Also, check the contacts in the mag being it's mag fired. If it's 5 years old and you haven't serviced it since it was new, it may just need the contacts cleaned or replaced. You might have a plug or two mis-firing too. Just a couple easy things to check. Good Luck!

Try checking the compression cold and if it's ok check it with the engine hot. I had the same problem with my WD45 and it turned out the rocker arms were too tight. The valves would shut all the way when cold but when the engine warms up the block and heads expand and then the clearance between pushrods and rockers tightens up, and if you don't have them lose enough the valves won't shut all the way, thus loosing compression resulting in a miss and loss of power.
