Identify Engine--Model U

I have a 1948 Allis-Chalmers Model U that my neighbour and I are going to rip apart and hopefully put back together as a restored tractor. One problem is how do you identify the engine? I know the Model U used a Continental engine at one time, and my partner is sure this tractor uses the Waukesha-built "Allis Engine" and my old Dad says its a "35 horse". Right now we are trying to unseize the engine, but how does one identify it? Are there any particular features and where are the identification stampings found?

I'm just going to clarify what the other post says. The continental engine is a flat head. The spark plugs go right straight in from the top. The AC engine has the plugs going in from the side of the head..parallel to the ground.

The continental engine is a flat head engine. and the allis (waukesha engine) has the valves in the head. hope this helps luke
