I am trying to install new rod bearings on a new crank and with each bearing installation it gets tighter. will all assembled it is very tight. More then I think it should be. The book mentions shims between the rod and cap. What are these and where can I get them????? ?? My parts supplier who sold me the bearing said he has never heard of them. Thanks 086265

Dave, I have old brg manuals and the Federal Mogul manual calls for .009 shim pack Part # 1033-009 for con rods 3 of part # 1034-009 for the main brgs. The last one we did we removed the shims and recondition the rod To 2.0615-2.062 bore. Line bored the main saddles to 2.421---2.422.If you can't find the shims and you decide to make them you need to come up with the above housing bore size. If you go to a full service shop they should be able to help you. Earl

DAve, by now you have probably figured out from the posts that "ALLIS motor use small shims under the main and rod cap bolts to get running clearance. You should have .002 inch clearance when installed. I believe the motors started with three .002 shims on each bolt. After several years the farmer was to take out .002 to get back to proper clearance. Tis allowed the owner to do his own maintenanc without going back to the ALLIS dealer. Plastigauge is the correct method, but if it is tight, put a .002 shim on each cap bolt and roll it over. If o.k., then go to the next cap. One at a time untill all caps and rods are done. THE only drag you should have is the piston rings when finished. The caps should have holes in the bolts so you can install wires or cotter pins when finished.

I would think a B would be about the same for setting up the bearings as a WD. If so you need not only shims but yhou need to file the bearing shells on the ends so you have the correct amount of cursh. That is the bearing shells should touch together a couple of thousnads before the rod cap and rod. When you reduce the amount of shims, you need to file the bearing to maintain the correct amount of "crush". Get a AC manual or copy of one and find out how to do it right. To measure the amount you have filed of the bearing I set up a dial indicator on a flat surface and run the bearing under it, two ends down, dial indicator indicating on the round "top". It is easy to measure howmuch you have removed this way. Put the bearing assembly together just finger tight and use a feeler gage to see howmany shims you need, shim it and check clearance with Plastigage, if you have to remove .002 say, take out that much in shims, and file the bearing shells to maintain the specified amount of bearing "crush" . It can take a long time to do right.

If you can get them from an AC supplier, that's great. I didn't have a source so ended up at NAPA. They had shim stock in sheets that wasn't too outa line for $$. I had to cut my own out with sissors but they worked fine. You'll also need some "Plastiguage" to check clearance. It's a teflon thread with specific thickness. You put a couple pieces under the bearing and tighten down the bearing cap. Remove the cap and measure how wide the thread got squished. There is a width guage on the wrapper that tells you what sort of clearance you have.

You can save on Plastiguage if you start with a thick shim and narrow down til you have the clearance right. It took me all day to fuss with a B to get all four piston rods right. It takes time and patience.

Email me if you don't have the proper clearance specs. It should be in your manual. I'll look it up for you if you don't have it.

dave you will probably have to go to allis to buy them i think they are still available.i bought some 3or4 years ago from them.or if u can find some shimstock at napa u can make your own have to get 2 or 3 different thickness though so u can fine tune your clearance while u are there better buy some plastigage to check clearance 1 to 2thousands if i remember right.rudy
