I have a Late WD-45 with distributor ignition. Would not run at all, switched plug wires around. Will start, but backfires thru carb and runs very rough. What is the proper order for plug wires from distributor to plugs. (i.e. 1,2,4,3 on cap and head. Thanks in advance

Keith, Once you get the firing order correct, better pull the plugs and clean em' up a little bit. They may be pretty fouled from backfiring especially if you had the firing order incorrect. Sometimes a plug gap may close a little, depending on how hard she backfired. Also, on distributors, make sure the contacts are clean and the rub block is evenly worn. If the rub block looks like it's worn on an angle, the contacts are probably "bouncing" and you'll have an insufficient spark which will cause it to misfire as you increase rpms. A new contact set should fix her up if you encounter that problem.

That's the correct firing order for most 4 cylinder engines and if that's on both the head and cap, I'd say you have it. Check your ignition timing and if that doesn't stop the backfire, check compression on all cylinders. You may have a burnt or sticking intake valve which would cause a backfire.

The reason for locating the plug wires in the distributer cap differently than on the actual plugs is because the rotor turns continuously 1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4 and etc. By changing plug wires in the cap to match the firing order, it will actually be firing 1..2..4..3 or however you install the wires. Simple, but necessary! Enjoy your tractor...it's SPRING!!

On rotor and cap does it follow same order. i.e. 1,2,4,and then 3. Probably seems like a stupid question (both in theory and practice)

Kieth,
The engine cylinders are numbered from front to rear 1 2 3 4. At any one time each piston is in a different position or stroke. When they fire the order is 1 2 4 3 so on the cap---from #1 follow a clockwise rotation and install the wires from each cylinder into the cap 1 2 4 3. (the cylinders are numbered but not the towers of the cap) Duey
