B hood w/o a temp guage hole?

I have two B/C model hoods in pretty good shape but notice a difference today. One doesn't have the hole to see the temp guage that mounts on the thermostat housing up near the radiator.

Never noticed that before. It has black lettering on what appears to be original paint.

Anyone know why this hood might be missing this hole? Did some tractors not use a temp guage?

I have an RC with a low serial number and it does not have a hole in the hood, and does not have a temp temp guage either. The upper water pipe has a place in the casting where it would be drilled for a guage, but it is not drilled. The tractor does not have shutters either and does not appear to have ever had them. It is also set up for gas ( serial number on the engine ends in G ).

It's my understanding that on the early production machines, only the kerosine version came with the temp guage and shutters. Some time later they all got the temp guage.

Tyler, The '38 B tractors did not have a Temperture gauge, and thus there wasn't a hole in the hood for one.

I'm restoring a '38 B and saw the "plugged" hole where the temp guage was suposed to be. I thought I was going to have to open the hole and tap it for a guage but you just solved my problem. I'll have to retract my guess that those decals were original then. The '38 had blue letter decals so the black ones on that hood must be from a later "restoration."
