I am looking for my first tractor for a small farm to use for general maintenance. I have relatively close to me, two Allis Chalmers to look at. 1957 CA, and a 5030. Any opinons on these as to pros/cons? I am partial to older tractors, but don't want to compromise reliability and workability for looks. Thanks

The 5030 is alot easier to get on and off of, has a 3 point hitch, diesel engine and is 20 years younger than the CA. On the other hand, the CA is simpler, just as (or more) reliable, is easy to work on and ought to cost about 1/3 the price of the 5030. It will do just about anything the 5030 can do providing you can find the right attachment (or 3-pt adapter). I own a CA and am very pleased with it. I have not done any major work on it - just oil/filter changes & tune ups. I use it primarily to mow my fields in the summer and plow my driveway in the winter. I put up with the leaky front seal and leaky hydraulic pump - I'll get around to fixing them some day... --- JT

Identifying Tractor Smells - by Curtis Von Fange. We are continuing our series on learning to talk the language of our tractor. Since we can’t actually talk to our tractors, though some of the older sect of farmers might disagree, we use our five physical senses to observe and construe what our iron age friends are trying to tell us. We have already talked about some of the colors the unit might leave as clues to its well-being. Now we are going to use our noses to diagnose particular smells. ELECTRICAL SMELLS
