How often do you guys change the oil in your restored Show tractors? If you went by hour running I wouldn't have to change it for three years but I don't like that idea. Is it a bit of a waste of time to change it every year? And should I change it in the spring or the Fall.

I have three show tractors, that I don't run in the winter ....I think it best to change oil and filter in the fall.....you want the engine to sit with clean oil over the winter.....be sure to start it after the change to get the fresh oil on the bearings..... now she is ready to go next spring..... ...

I would say once a year on engine oil and filter. Short runs of the engine cause water condensation in the crankcase so if the oil turns chocolate color between changes it is definatly time to change. The other fluids I just would not be concerned about except to keep them topped off and keep some antifreeze or anti-rust additive in the cooling system

I'm assuming it was just the motor oil you were refering to. The drivetrain gear oils I wouldn't worry about, as long as they're up to snuff..

if it is strictly a show tractor and never gets in the dirt and dust, i might try a little longer. my little tractor gest used just around the farm for light chores, maybe 50-60 hours a year. I like to change the motor oil every spring for the summer season. i wait on the transmission and hydraulics and expect to go 5 years, as long as it shows no water. I try to keep it in the barn, but not heated.

Trevor, I would imagine in a show tractor, where you're only running the machine at shows, and an occasional parade, that dumping the oil once a year wouldn't be a bad thing. Some of the lubricating properties in motor oils do separate from heat & while sitting over time, so that alone would be a plus just to keep the crankcase and internal engine components clean and well lubed.... Dang, that could get expensive. Especially when you are tractor poor. And another thing is keeping up batterys. Dave
