I'm new to AC so please bare with me. Did all WC'S come with a mag? If not when did they switch to a dist? I looked at a WC today. The serial number looked like 100463. 1940 I think. It had a dist. a battery, generator and it sure looked like a starter. Could all this stuff have been factory? Thank you very much. John Kauzlaric

All WC's {that I am aware of} came from the factory with a magneto. You can adapt a WC to have a distributor, and still have the generator on it, but in my own opinion, a WC is better with the mag. Just my two cents.

A distributor can be put on a WC. Even though it is not factory.

John, If my notes here are correct, the WC series machines were all magneto. Fairbanks versions were FMK4B3, FMJ4B3, or FMJ4B3A. (At least that's the 3 versions so far that I've been rebuilding from that particular tractor for folks) HTH Steve/B&B Custom Circuits

The distributor was introduced on the WD at serial #136318. The ignition on all WCs was a magneto. One thing to check is if the engine is a WC or not. Not sure on the engine serial number, but I think the WD engine starts with WD the WD45 with 45 and so on.

John,

I can't address the ignition for sure, but battery, lights and starter were added in '38. So, distributor ignition could have been added then or shortly after.

WC's never came with a distributor from the factory. Many had them added on later on, however. In fact, you could get a distributor drive (I have one in fact) that bolts right on where the magneto goes. It takes all of 5 minutes to change from magneto to distributor or vice versa with one of those set ups.
