The dropbox is the lower gearcase that has the two output shafts going to the front and the rear axle. The 8550 is a four-wheel drive tractor- the dropbox transmits power to both drive axles.

There aren't a whole lot of 8550's around here but the ones that are have been good tractors. I saw one in the shop with a scored cylinder but that is it. As for the 180, you can do either. We've had a 190 since I was 5 years old and most of the time we use the hand clutch. I love it for blowing snow. Once the oil gets warmed up I can shift between reverse and 4/6 without using the foot clutch, only using the hand clutch. It makes fast work of blowing out the yard. I miss the XT in the heavy snow however.
