Odd D-17 Engine Problem

Good Afternoon All,
When started, this D-17 Series IV runs rough, independant of load or temperature. However, the water temperature rises almost to the top end of the range, at which time it coughs and sputters, and then runs smooth. It continues to run smooth for the rest of the time it's running, and the water temp rapidly drops back to normal. The cough is sometimes accompanied by black smoke or oil from the exhaust. If running under load or in hot weather, this happens faster than no load and cold weather. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

Sounds like you need to change the thermostat.If this motor is on gas,the manifold could be stoping up, if so it would be showing power loss and sparks out the exhaust, check the oil leval in air cleaner,water could have got in the oil & raised the leval above normal, this would cause the cough & black smoke. if this is a Diesel someone else may have more input. Gordon,
It is indeed a gas engine. I will check the air filter - which is something I didn't think of while checking spark plugs, valve settings, etc. The old girl probably does need a new thermostat as well. Thank you very much for your help.
