I just purchased a CA Allis, and the front oil seal is leaking. Does the cover plate need to be removed to change the seal, and is this a difficult task?

You can replace the seal without removing the cover by drilling a small hole for a screw and using a slide hammer or pliers. Be sure to check the cover alignment. There is a tool for this but it can be checked by sliding the seal over the crank and up against, but not into the cover. Needs to be centered. The cover has a lot of room to move around on the bolt holes and is not doweled. It is supposed to be recentered when removed but lots of them weren't at rebuilds and thus the seal leaks. If the cover needs to be moved you might as well get oil pan and cover gaskets too unless you like "blue glue" Also clean the valve cover breather, another source of seal leaks when plugged up.
