I finally talked my brother into buying an antique tractor but he has not got it home yet.He bought it locked up but dirt cheap with cultivators and breaking plough.The tires look new and the guy who had it had it up on blocks.He parked it a couple of years ago and it sat there and locked up.It has a flapper on the muffler and has been under a tarp all this time.Do you reckon it is locked up BAD or could some magic potion in the cylinders eventually free it up?Some good advice would be great and help that first time tractor owner.Thanks

I really don’t have an answer to this. My B does the same thing - kind of. It runs fine until it gets warm then starts to miss and finally dies. It will not start until it cools down. The only thing I can offer is what I have been thru. Was told the coil could be bad. Looked at spark when cold - looked good. Looked at spark when hot and was yellow. Ok found problem. Picked up another mag and put it in. Same thing - died when hot but spark looked good even when hot. Ok found a problem but not the cause. Someone told me they had a farmall M that did the same thing and it ended up being worn valve springs. Ok simple enough to change and kind of inexpensive - made no difference. Did notice timing mark would jump around and that ended up being bushing on end of governor (towards radiator) was working it way out - pushed it back in. timing mark was steady, ran better but still died when warm. Took compression test when cold - 75psi then when it quit - 50psi. Think this may be my problem. Not going the whole route just now. Bought rings and about ready to tear it down. Hopefully that will be the fix if the cylinder walls are in good shape and not too worn. Aren’t old tractors fun.

It should be fairly easy to unstick this one. Check the valves as they have a tendency to stick. Whatever you do, DO NOT pull it to get it unstuck. Expensive parts can be damaged or broken doing this. I recommend PB Blaster (available at Wal-Mart) and Kroil (www.kanolabs.com) as the penetrating oils of choice. Some folks like Marvel Mystery Oil and others swear by diesel fuel.

First, remove all the sparkplugs and check for water in the cylinders. Remove any water and fill each cylinder with your penetrant of choice, then reinstall the plugs. Now, let it sit for a week. After a week, remove the starter and use a pry bar on the ring gear to try and turn the engine. If it doesen't move, wait another week. Time is your friend here. Repeat the process until the engine starts to move. Rock the engine back and forth until you can get a full turn of the crank.

If there is no success with the cylinders, check the valves to see that each one will move. Use a pry bar to depress each valve in turn. Apply penetrant to any that do not move, wait a week and try again. Keep working on them until they all move.

Basically this job is simple patience and lots of elbow grease.

PHIL, Another one to try is Rust Eater, my buddy had a block out of a CA that was sitting outside with the head off for several years. I sprayed this on the pistons and let it set for a couple days, took a block of wood and tapped on them and they came loose. Remind you these were rusted bad. This stuff is avaliable at Auto Zone or O'Rielly's auto.
