I have a B with a new rebuilt engine, the head was reworked 3 angle valve job. Starts quick and idles fine, the compression is the same in all the cylinders. When you give it full throttle it will pick up a few more RPM and that is it.I have had the mag rebuilt. The carb came of a good running tractor. I have noticed that the clyinder that is in the 3rd position back from the waterpump is missing, again it has compression and spark. Any help would be great.

Mike, Might disconnect the throttle linkage in front of the carb at the point where the governor rod comes across in front of the radiator. With the throttle handle on the steering shaft in the wide open position the linkage from the carb to the governor arm should be about 1/16" to short to be able to go back in the hole. If it is not short you have to bend the governor arm so it is short.Check your manual about the 1/16" as that is from memory. Make sure you have the correct governor spring as the wrong tension will give the wrong response. I would get fire to #3 before doing anything. HTH Dale

Does the throttle plate in the carb open fully? You can check this without the engine running. You should be able to just disconnect the throttle linkage and move the throttle plate by hand and observe it move from full open to nearly closed (depending on how the idle stop screw is set.) Check the choke plate the same way If this is fine then make sure your float level is set up right and you are getting a good fuel flow to the carb. This does not sound like a spark problem, if the carb is working I would suspect the intake manifold is leaking, this could lean out #3 also and cause it not to fire.

if the timeing is at top dead center, but will not advance, the tractor will start fine, but have trouble getting much more speed. you might chekc with a timing light, or check advance in the governor. pins stuck, spring broke?

Check the intake vacuum with a vacuum gauge.

Thanks for the info,
I can grab the carb linkage to overcome the Gov.but it still won,t rev up to full throttle. The bad thing is ,with all the rebuilding on this tractor it has the same problem we started with when we unstuck the motor and started it up ! The only thing not perfect on the tractor is the intake/exhaust manifold, The ear on the far right of the manifold next to the air cleaner is broken, i used a big washer to hold the two pcs together against the head, seals good dosn't seem to leak using the carb cleaner test, also had the manifold presure tested.

Mike,
check that all of the linkage is free to move and not catching on something. Duey

Hi
With the tractor idling grab linkage at carb,,
if it doesn`t rev,,then let tracter warm up,, vales may have the right setting but now with the same specs must be set with a warm engine,,A/C did lot of this style.
Pretty acurate.

Hi. i have a b also,it does the same thing i believe the problem is the govenor spring, because i can easily apply pressure on the throtle rod and it speeds up quickly, but i havn't repaired it as yet,(too many rods in the fire so to speak)as for your engine missing, that shouldn't make it not rev up even with one cylinder missing,it should rev up,but it will take longer, but it does sound to me like u might have a leaky intake gasket. hope this helps

Mike,
Could be just as simple as a bad plug misfiring in #3. Doesn't matter if their new or old. (especially if they're Champion) Take the plug out of #3, stick it in #2 and fire the motor. If it starts to miss again, & it's #2 that's missin' this time, dare's yer' problem... Steve B.

as for #3 not firing check the simple stuff first spark plug and wire if that is not a problem go a little deeper and pull the valve cover and watch your valve operation to make sure everything is working properly after u have asertained that u are getting fire from the mag or dist.to #3 plug whichever the case might be. as for your problem of not revving up sounds like a governor problem but i have had water in the air cleaner where the oil is supposed to be freeze up and have the same problem u are describing good luck let us know how it works out rudy
