D17 lift troubleshooting

Finally installed a 3-pt hitch on our '58 D17 diesel. The tractor came with a fender-mounted valve and two hoses connected to the two lines from the front. Lift wouldn't work at all with this valve hooked up. Removed this valve and plugged both connections. This didn't work so I installed one of the hoses from one connection on the side to the line on the top rear of the valve.
Now the lift works but holding at a certain height is sporatic. Also, lowering is very slow--using a heavy Gill boxblade. During lifting, I can hear a chattering or tapping sound-maybe the relief valve?? I'm having trouble figuring out the two different controls--one for the lift up or down and the other one for the traction booster. Booster gauge works during lifting--the pressure goes up with higher lift settings or higher traction booster settings. If anyone has any ideas, they would be welcome.

One line should go to the rear ram and one to an axillary outlet. Are you over filling the trans with oil? I think there is a valve you have to close to get one or the other to work.

You have a 4 piston pump it is low vol. high pressure. It is made for one way flow, so when the handle is down it will not pump up pump pressure in the middle to hold. The one on the right is for plowing or pulling on the rear snap coupler for traction. You would be better off with either a front pump or pto gear pump. If you have a lot of time it will lift it all you need is one line from pump to ram. You might have to add on a extra reservoir for more oil. the noise I think you hear is the pump building pressure. Do not leave handle up it will damage pump.

Are you saying there's nothing unusual with the lift not being able to hold position and that I have the "jumper" line connected properly? I knew the early models didn't have the greatest system, but I never knew they wouldn't even hold the lift at a certain position. How would one ever plow with that setup? Guess you'd have to use a towed type rather than 3-point plow.

I also looked at my service manual but it shows multi-port valve setups that this tractor doesn't have. There are two lines that run along the left side of the tractor and they both connect to a valve body on the left side of the differential housing with 3/8" pipe. This valve body also has a 1/2" line coming out the rear of the valve--this one was originally capped off, but now I have the "jumper" line connected to it.

I have two early D-17's, one the hydraulics work like yours does, the other works well, not like a modern tractor but will lift an 800lbs round bale an hold it. I would have to think the problem is in the pump, I don't know if it was on this site or the other Allis forum, about a guy with a D-19 with similar problems. I think it was in the pump and they got it fixed. Good luck, Jeff

Kevin, The D-17 I have that the hydraulics work poorly also has 2 lines coming out of the tractor, the other has only 1. I have a D-15 with only 1 line and the lift and hydraulic outlet work well on that tractor. With more than one tractor I'm not that worried about the poor hydraulics on the one. I hope you can get it figured out. Jeff

I was wondering about the valve body I have--in particular the two lines that run along the left side of the tractor forward. Are they supposed to have a "jumper line" on them or not? I'm trying to sort out the pipe connections on the valve body before I go into the pump. Do you know what the 1/2" pipe on the rear of the valve body is for? The only connection I haven't tried is to jump across the two 3/8" pipe fittings--the ones that tie into the two steel tubing runs that connect on the left forward side of the tractor. I assume if I jump across these, it'll just cause a "deadhead" and nothing will work-but I'll try it anyway.
