My question is whether I should use permatex or some other sealant on the intake/exhaust manifold of my B. I can't get a good seal just using the gasket. Starts okay, but starts sucking air when it heats up. What's the best stuff?

Sounds like your manifold may be warped or burned and all ports are not at the same level. You may have to remove it and place a good straightedge along the port surfaces where they mate to the head. If there are any gaps you can file it all level or surface grind it so that all port surfaces are flat and even. You can then reassemble it and use hi temp copper silicon if you like, though it shouldn't be necessary.
