Per the 'picture gallery', this tractor looks quite small. High visibility due to the smaller engine hood with rounded front corners. I understand about 3000 lbs & with filling tires plus some front weights, could exceed 4000lbs with driver. Anyways, per the Nebraska drawbar tests, the D-12 pulls a whopping (consider the size) 30hp. This tractor with the wide front end looks like a natural for my wife. I have sandy loam, do you think it could pull a 7-point field culivator? Is the later years High/Low option going to make a difference? And, is the gear train up to the hard work without breaking? As a comparison, a Ford 4 wheel drive #1715 (no added weight) rated about 23 drawbar hp had a tough time with traction pulling the culivator in old, not worked for years, well drained sandy loam soil. Your comments please.

A lot of guys have pulled three bottoms with a two bottom rated tractor. some guys may have pulled a baler with a D12. I have not owned or even driven a D12. I have driven A D14 and bigger AC tractors. While a D14 may pull a baler I know how much a baler will work a WD and or WD45. They both are fairly adquate. In my opinion I would not buy a D12 to pull a baler while it may do the job I question that it will hold up. Any way around here those littl D Series such as the D10 and D12 what few I have seen anyway are rather pricey compared to the higher Horsepower tractors. Just my thoughts I have seen you asking a lot of questions. I would really like one of these tractors but not for a work horse. But if you like it go for it. You are the one that needs to be happy with it not me. Sid

So, if I understand this: the D-12 has about 29.8 drawbar HP whereas the D-14 has about 30.4 drawbar horsepower. Now the D-12 stock weighs about 2900lbs and the D-14 3900lbs. I know both tractors were tested with extra weight, however I do not know how much. It appears the drawbar horsepower or pulling power is about the same. Is it just actual conditions in the field really do not make the Nebraska test results 'true world' condition? Or perhaps I should be looking at the D-14 stronger frame & weight spread over a longer wheelbase? Tnx in advance, 'Greenhorn Jimbob'.

In my opinion the heavier tractors seems to lessen the rocking effect you sometimes get with a baler. for example I took the wheel weights off my WD when I changed tires and the same baler seemed to rock the tractor more. I have a data book about AC tractors It shows pretty much the same figure you mentioned about horsepower and weight. but here is something else you might want to consider, this book shows that the D12 max. pull was 4,241 pounds while the max pull for the D14 was 4,847 pound really not much difference but it also shows PTO for D12, 28.5 hp and the D14, 34.8 hp quite a bit of difference there. I personelly think the extra mass is an advantage as is the extra PTO hp rating. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Hope this helps explain why I think the D14 in my opinion is the better choice of the two Sid

My dad has a D-12 that I pulled an IH baler(I forget the model #) with when I was a kid. We still have the tractor and have done nothing to it other than put a manifold on it. I agree that a heavier model tractor would have been nicer when baling in the hills, but it was always adequate.
