D-17 front mount hyd. pump

I have a 59 model D-17 I would like to put a front end loader on this tractor, I have seen these tractors with a hydraulic pump mounted out the front of the tractor, connecting directly to the crank pully. Does any one know about this kind of pump set up?

I have several D17s and one with an Allis-Chalmers loader with a front pump. This pump is usually supplied by the loader manufacturer. It is possible to obtain after-market pump and adapt to your tractor.

Text taken out of my repair manual:

"Effective with gasoline tractor S/N D17-15931 and diesel tractor S/N 16035 and engine S/N 104840 crankshaft pulleys for front mounted drives were used in production. When mounting front mounted pumps or similar equipment on tractors prior to the above serial numbers, it will be necessary to order these pulleys from parts. The mounting flange hub and shaft which attaches to the pulley is furnished by the Allied Equipment Manufacturer."

It may be possible to have your pulley machined to adapt to a pump, if it is before serial number 15931.

Will this pulley and pump setup work with a later model WC??? Do you know what types of loaders will adapt to a WC ??? Any info will be appreciated. AL

This type setup for a D17 will not work on WC, WD, or WD45. I bought a kit for a WC fifteen years ago or so from Central Tractor. This kit contained a pump and mounting brackets, which ran off the crankshaft pulley. I doubt if you will be able to find any of these kits as they were discontinued years ago. You probably could buy a pump and adapt to your WC, but it would be very expensive and time-consuming to mount the front pump. The pump mounts behind the steering gearbox on a WC which has very little room to install pump and service. These types of pumps seem to cause a lot of problems if you use your tractor quite a bit. I would not recommend this type of setup for a WC. The D17 pump mounts in front of the steering gearbox with a shaft running back to the crankshaft pulley. This is a much better setup being that the pump is mounted out front and has easy access for service and mounting. Also, on your WC, if you have a narrow front end, you had better have three seventeen-year-old sons to help you steer it if you have a loader on it. A wide front end would help somewhat but still steers terribly hard. I'd recommend finding a tractor with power steering and more modern pump hookup. I still have my WC with a loader, but I don't use it very much due to the fact that I have power steering on another tractor with a loader.
